Walmart targets higher-income shoppers and Gen Z workers

Walmart is implementing strategic shifts in both its retail offerings and its workforce development programs. To attract higher-income shoppers, the retailer has partnered with designer Brandon Maxwell to upgrade its clothing departments, aiming to compete with retailers like Target by offering more sophisticated apparel selections.

Simultaneously, the company is targeting Gen Z workers through debt-free career pathways. Walmart offers paid training programs designed to transition frontline associates into high-paying specialized roles, such as truck drivers, skilled technicians, and licensed opticians. The Associate to Driver program, for example, has helped over 1,000 employees move into driving roles, where experienced drivers can earn up to $135,000 annually.
