Disney World modifies wheelchair accessibility and files new ride access patent

Walt Disney World is reportedly phasing out all-terrain or beach wheelchairs at select locations. While standard wheelchairs and Electric Conveyance Vehicles (ECVs) remain available for rent at all theme parks and Disney Springs, guests have noted the removal of specialized equipment previously used to navigate the terrain at water parks like Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.

Disney’s website currently states that Blizzard Beach does not provide waterproof or water-accessible wheelchairs for use in pools or attractions. Standard rentals are limited to paved dry pathways and walkways.

In a separate development regarding accessibility, Disney has filed a patent application for a ‘Rider Inclusive Transport Aide.’ This proposed solution aims to assist guests with disabilities on rides that involve non-flat surfaces or lifts. The technology would equip ride vehicles with a sloping access platform to offset the incline, addressing the difficulty of evacuating or boarding wheelchair users when a ride stops on a slope.
