Walter Koenig, Star Trek actor known for Pavel Chekov, dies at 90 FAST-MOVING
American actor Walter Koenig, best known for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original ‘Star Trek’ television series, has died at the age of 90. He passed away on Sunday at his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, surrounded by his daughter and niece, according to his representative, Zachery McGinnis.
Koenig joined the ‘Star Trek’ cast in its second season in 1967, portraying the young Russian navigator. His character became a cultural staple, appearing in 36 episodes of the original series and reprising the role in seven feature films between 1979 and 1991. Beyond the Star Trek franchise, Koenig had a notable career in science fiction, most famously playing Alfred Bester in ‘Babylon 5’.
His longtime co-star George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, paid tribute to Koenig, describing him as a “thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.” Koenig was also a writer, teacher, and recipient of the Platinum Award at the Independent Shorts Awards in 2026 for his work in ‘Mr. Fleischmann’.
