Walter Mazariegos faces protests and legal uncertainty over continuation as USAC rector

Opposition groups at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (USAC) won the majority of seats on the University Electoral Body, but the university’s Superior Council approved only the candidates supportive of rector Walter Mazariegos. The council suspended 16 of the 21 opposition‑won votes and allowed 10 bodies that Mazariegos secured to proceed, prompting accusations of a second electoral fraud. Pro‑Mazariegos demonstrations involving students and staff have continued amid claims of pressure and coercion.

As the 2022‑2026 term ends on 30 June, pending legal challenges and a recent reform to the university’s election regulations could enable Mazariegos to remain in office until a successor is installed. Analysts say the legal loophole and political decisions make a de‑facto continuation likely, extending a four‑year institutional crisis that has disrupted academic and administrative activities.
