Walter Osswald, a prominent physician, pharmacologist, and pioneer of bioethics in Portugal, has died in Porto at the age of 98.

Osswald completed his doctorate at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), where he built an extensive academic career. He retired in 1993 as a professor of pharmacology and general therapeutics. Following his retirement, he focused on the study, teaching, and research of bioethics, a field he is credited with helping to establish and consolidate within Portugal. His contributions included founding and directing the Bioethics Research Office and the Institute of Bioethics at the Catholic University.

A prolific scholar, Osswald held a UNESCO Chair of Bioethics and authored approximately 600 articles. His professional achievements were recognized with numerous honors, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Santiago of the Sword, the Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction, and the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Coimbra.
