Walter Ruck faces mounting pressure over scandal in Austria’s Wiener Wirtschaftskammer

Walter Ruck, president of the Wiener Wirtschaftskammer, is under intense scrutiny after leaked conversation recordings alleged sexist remarks and manipulation of chamber election lists. Analyses of the 2025 chamber election suggest the ÖVP‑linked Wirtschaftsbund may have secured an absolute majority (50.2 %) through “Einheitslisten” and subsequent reallocation of mandates, prompting accusations of vote rigging.

Prominent ÖVP figures, including party leader Christian Stocker, regional leaders Karoline Edtstadler (Salzburg) and Markus Wallner (Vorarlberg), and the ÖVP ethics committee, have called for Ruck’s resignation or even party exclusion. Several parliamentarians, such as Ingrid Korosec, and opposition parties (NEOS, FPÖ) demand concrete action, labeling the behavior “unacceptable” and harmful to the party’s credibility. The SPÖ mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, continues to publicly support Ruck, creating a partisan divide.
