Vienna Economic Chamber President Walter Ruck faces resignation calls

Leaked recordings of a private men’s meeting have shown Vienna Economic Chamber president Walter Ruck (ÖVP) making sexist remarks and discussing patronage of party members and family for lucrative posts. The disclosures, first published by profil and Krone, allege that Ruck criticized industrialists, referred to “caviar breakfasts”, and spoke dismissively about the party’s stance on women.

The revelations have triggered a wave of political pressure. Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) warned that “all accusations must be clarified and, if true, cannot go without consequences.” WKÖ president Martha Schultz likewise said the statements “do not reflect our values” and called for appropriate action. NEOS party spokesperson Markus Hofer demanded an immediate resignation, calling the situation “alternativlos.”

Within the city, SPÖ mayor Michael Ludwig defended Ruck, saying he has “always had a good working relationship” and does not expect a withdrawal. Former ÖVP figure Bernhard Görg echoed the view that Ruck is unlikely to survive politically under the mounting pressure. The scandal has also raised questions about nepotism in the chamber, with claims that Ruck facilitated appointments for his sons and family members in social‑security and other institutions.

The controversy revolves around internal party dynamics, accusations of nepotism and sexism, and the broader credibility of the Wiener Wirtschaftskammer.
