Waltraud P. ordered to serve prison sentence in men's facility
Austrian authorities have ruled that Waltraud P., a former figure in the Vienna red-light district, must serve her prison sentence in a men's prison. P. was sentenced to 20 months of unconditional imprisonment for national socialist re-engagement, specifically for spreading Nazi imagery and antisemitic messages, plus an additional 12 months from a previous conviction, totaling 32 months.
Legal counsel Nikolaus Rast has expressed concerns regarding the physical safety of his client and has applied for house arrest under electronic monitoring via an ankle monitor. The lawyer argues that P. should not be placed in a multi-person cell at the Josefstadt prison.
The case has drawn attention due to the individual's legal gender transition from Walter to Waltraud in 2023. A hearing is scheduled for November 3 at the Vienna Regional Administrative Court to determine whether the legal requirements for recognizing P.'s trans identity have been met.
