Waltrop changes downtown square renovation plans

The city of Waltrop has revised its construction plans for its downtown squares. Instead of proceeding with parallel renovations, the city and the Kramer Group have agreed to renovate the Platz von Gardelegen (Kiepenkerl-Platz) and the Herne-Bay-Platz sequentially.

This change follows recommendations from the city marketing association, which expressed concerns that simultaneous construction sites could negatively impact the upcoming Christmas shopping season. Local retailers have opted for a longer overall construction period to avoid this disruption.

Work on the Platz von Gardelegen is currently paused due to delivery delays for concrete components, which are expected in mid-October. Preparatory work for installation is scheduled for late September, and the square is expected to be completed before Christmas 2026. Following the holiday break, construction on Herne-Bay-Platz will begin, with an estimated completion date in the second quarter of 2027.
