Walyalup Bridge name unveiled for new Fremantle crossing

The new Fremantle Traffic Bridge has been officially named Walyalup Bridge. The name honors the traditional Whadjuk Noongar name for Fremantle, derived from 'walyo', the Noongar word for the woylie.

Scheduled to open ahead of schedule at a cost of $596 million, the bridge is Australia’s first to combine cantilever and cable-stay supports. It features two lanes in each direction alongside wide paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The design incorporates heritage elements, including public art, feature lighting, and the retention of original timber piles from the previous structure.

A community celebration is set for November 1st, allowing the public to walk across the bridge from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm before it opens to vehicular traffic later that evening.
