Wami/Ruvu Basin Water Board prepares for El Nino rains
The Wami/Ruvu Basin Water Board has convened a task force in Dar es Salaam alongside river cleaning stakeholders to develop strategies for the upcoming El Nino rains, expected to begin in October.
Engineer Elibariki Mmassy, Director of the Board, emphasized that maintaining clean rivers is essential for protecting water sources. He called for cooperation between the government, the private sector, and citizens to prevent water channels from clogging, which could lead to flooding and environmental damage.
Engineer Amani Mafuru, the Assistant Administrative Secretary overseeing infrastructure for the Dar es Salaam Region, urged all institutions to fulfill their responsibilities promptly to ensure drains and rivers remain clear. Additionally, Athumani Kambi of CHAWAMADA noted the importance of community education to discourage waste disposal in water sources, while contractor Shani Ngwanda affirmed that cleaning efforts will adhere to professional standards to safeguard infrastructure.
