Wan Muhamad Noor Matha calls for improved security integration in Southern Thailand

Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, advisor to the Prime Minister and the government's special representative for resolving issues in the southern border provinces, has called for improved integration and intelligence gathering to address ongoing unrest in Southern Thailand.

Following discussions with the Prime Minister and security agencies, Matha acknowledged that previous efforts suffered from loose integration between agencies and flawed intelligence assessments. He noted that authorities had previously underestimated the scale of insurgent groups, leading to complacency. To address this, he suggested utilizing new technologies, such as AI, and emphasized the need for better cooperation between security forces, the Ministry of Interior, the Royal Thai Police, and local leaders.

Matha stressed that effective solutions must incorporate voices from local communities, religious leaders, and citizens, rather than relying solely on central government data. He warned that continued instability directly threatens local investment and tourism. Regarding the causes of recent violence, Matha noted that while there is speculation regarding political motives or upcoming elections, facts must be verified before conclusions are drawn. He also highlighted a challenge where local residents and politicians are sometimes hesitant to provide information due to fear of being perceived as opponents.
