Wandering supermassive black hole discovered far from galaxy center

Astronomers have discovered a supermassive black hole located approximately 30,000 light-years away from its host galaxy's center. The discovery was made possible by observing a tidal disruption event (TDE), a rare cosmic occurrence where a star wanders too close to a black hole and is pulled apart by extreme gravitational forces.

The event, identified as TDE 2025abcr, was first flagged by the Zwicky Transient Facility and confirmed by NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The resulting flare briefly outshone its entire host galaxy in ultraviolet light. The black hole involved is estimated to have a mass of roughly one million Suns.
