Wandering Supermassive Black Hole Discovered; NASA’s Roman Telescope to Hunt More

Astronomers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill identified a supermassive black hole, about one million times the Sun’s mass, wandering in the outer region of galaxy WISEA J014656.04‑152214.7, roughly 30,000 light‑years from its core. The detection came from a rare tidal‑disruption event (TDE 2025abcr) that shattered a star, observed in visible light in December 2025 and confirmed with AI‑enhanced analysis and ground‑based telescopes. The researchers suggest the black hole may have been displaced by a past galaxy merger or extreme gravitational interactions.

NASA plans to use the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, slated for launch on 30 August 2026, to locate additional supermassive black holes by monitoring similar tidal‑disruption flashes. The mission aims to detect black holes that existed up to 11 billion years ago, shedding light on how such objects grew rapidly in the early universe. Mitchell Karmen of Johns Hopkins University highlighted the telescope’s sensitivity will enable discoveries of distant TDEs far beyond current capabilities.
