Wang Chongyang: Historical Taoist and Jin Yong literary icon

Wang Chongyang (1113–1170) was a historical Chinese Taoist priest and the founder of the Quanzhen Sect. He also serves as a legendary figure in the wuxia novels of author Jin Yong.

In Jin Yong’s literature, Wang is depicted as the supreme martial arts master and leader of the martial arts world. During the first Mount Hua competition, he famously defeated four other top masters—Huang Yaoshi, Ouyang Feng, Duan Zhixing, and Hong Qigong—after seven days of combat. Unlike other characters who sought power through secret manuals like the 'Nine Yin Manual', Wang sought to protect the martial arts community from bloodshed, ultimately choosing not to practice the manual himself and instructing his disciples to avoid it.

Historically, Wang was a prominent Taoist monk, and under his leadership, the Quanzhen Sect reached a golden age of prestige and influence.
