Wang Family Compound: The 700-year legacy of a Shanxi dynasty

The Wang family of Shanxi, China, has maintained its prosperity for over 700 years, spanning 22 generations. This enduring legacy is epitomized by the Wang Family Compound in Lingshi County, a massive estate covering 250,000 square meters, which is larger than the Forbidden City in Beijing.

The family's history began in the mid-14th century during the Yuan Dynasty when Wang Chengzhai, a poor farmer, started a small tofu business. Through diligence and a commitment to honesty, the family transitioned from farming to commerce during the Ming Dynasty. They became part of the renowned ‘Jin merchants’ (Shanxi merchants), trading salt, food, and textiles across land-based Silk Road routes.

The family reached its financial and social peak during the Qing Dynasty, particularly under the reigns of Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong. Their success was driven by providing military provisions and expanding a private banking system.
