Wang Yen-cheng renews contract with Hanwha Eagles

Taiwanese left-handed pitcher Wang Yen-cheng has renewed his contract with the Hanwha Eagles of the KBO League. Following a successful season in which he recorded 11 wins, 6 losses, and a 3.97 ERA, the club offered a contract totaling $300,000, including a $100,000 signing bonus and a $200,000 annual salary. This represents a threefold increase from his initial contract.

Wang's performance made him the first pitcher under the KBO's Asian foreign player system to achieve double-digit wins in a single season. His success comes despite challenges during the year, including a hospitalization for pneumonia and participation in the Asian Games.

Liu Ji-hsuan, the newly appointed manager of the Hanwha Eagles, expressed high regard for Wang. Liu noted that he first observed Wang's exceptional work ethic and polite demeanor during the Asian Games in Nagoya, where Liu served as the manager for the South Korean team. Liu described Wang as a player whose talent exceeds the standard expectations for Asian foreign players, viewing him as a potential pillar for the team's starting rotation next season.
