Wangdue Phodrang hosts Sha Festival to preserve Bhutanese heritage
The annual Sha Festival in Wangdue Phodrang, Bhutan, serves to preserve the district’s cultural identity, indigenous languages, and traditional arts. The event aims to safeguard fading customs while promoting local tourism and economic opportunities.
Key highlights include the Sha-Gi-Locho, an ancient ritual performed every three years to seek peace and prosperity. Additionally, the festival features the Olep Dance, a community-led initiative designed to protect the disappearing Olep dialect through music and dance, utilizing traditional vocabulary to reconnect younger generations with their linguistic heritage.
