Wangen im Allgäu: History and geography of the Baden-Württemberg town

Wangen im Allgäu is a town located in the Ravensburg district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Situated on the edge of West Allgäu along the Upper Argen river, it has a population of approximately 28,412 as of late 2024.

Historically, the town was first mentioned in 815 in a document from the St. Gallen Monastery. Due to its position as a junction for roads connecting Ravensburg, Lindau, Leutkirch, and Isny, it became a significant hub for Alpine long-distance trade during the late Middle Ages. The town was elevated to the status of an Imperial City in 1286 and joined the Swabian City League in 1349. Following the Thirty Years' War and the plague in the 17th century, the town underwent various political shifts, eventually losing its Imperial City status in 1803 and becoming part of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1810.
