Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi supports Vincent Pala for Shillong by-election

Former Rajya Sabha MP and ex-National People’s Party (NPP) Meghalaya president Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi has announced his support for Congress candidate Vincent H. Pala in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.

Kharlukhi, who resigned from the NPP in August, stated that his decision is driven in part by opposition to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. He expressed concerns that Section 16-A of the proposed legislation poses a threat to minority groups, specifically the Christian community. Kharlukhi credited the Congress Party with successfully referring the Bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee to prevent its immediate passage.

While addressing speculation regarding his departure from the NPP, Kharlukhi clarified that his resignation was a personal decision and denied claims that he was being sidelined within the party. He emphasized the need to strengthen the Congress in Parliament to counter the BJP and address legislative concerns.
