Wanying Zhang accused of spying for China in U.S

Wanying “Heather” Zhang, a 34-year-old California real estate agent, has been arrested and ordered to remain in pretrial detention after being accused of acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government.

Federal prosecutors allege that Zhang conducted surveillance on the family of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te in the Seattle area. According to FBI affidavits, Zhang allegedly photographed residences and recorded vehicle license plates of the targets. Investigators also claim she sought the address of a Taiwanese elected official in Irvine, California, following a meeting with Chinese officials in June 2025.

Zhang was apprehended at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) while attempting to board a flight to Shanghai. While her defense argued she has strong local family ties, prosecutors successfully argued she poses a significant flight risk due to her financial resources and connections in China. Zhang previously attended the University of International Relations in Beijing, an institution linked to China's Ministry of State Security.
