Wanying Zhang arrested for allegedly spying on Taiwan President's family
Wanying Zhang, an accused agent of the Chinese Ministry of State Security, was arrested by the FBI while attempting to board a flight to Shanghai. According to court documents, Zhang and an accomplice traveled to Washington state in September 2025 to conduct surveillance on the son of Taiwan's President, Lai Ching-te.
Former intelligence expert Nick Eftimiades noted that the case highlights a pattern of aggressive Chinese espionage, involving specialized tactics such as the use of secure voice communications and Apple AirDrop to transmit operational images. FBI officials also revealed that Zhang held over $190,000 in Chinese bank accounts and engaged in unauthorized fund transfers to the United States.
In response to recent Chinese government actions, including sanctions and accusations against Taiwanese figures, official Wang Wanyu criticized Beijing's tactics. She stated that the Chinese Communist Party is using intimidation to force Taiwanese compliance, but emphasized that the people of Taiwan must remain united to defend their democracy.
