War anniversaries mark deaths of journalists and civilians in Croatia

Commemorations are being held to mark the 35th anniversary of several fatal incidents during the conflict in Croatia in October 1991.

In Serbia, the anniversary marks the killing of four Radio Televizija Srbije (RTS) journalists from Šabac. Zoran Amidžić, cameraman Bora Petrović, and assistant Dejan Milićević were killed in an ambush on the Petrinja-Glina road on October 9, 1991. Mobilized editor Sretan Ilić died while en route to a hospital. The Journalists' Association of Serbia (UNS) notes that no one has been held accountable for these killings, and an investigation was never launched. A memorial stands in Šabac to honor the victims.

In Croatia, the anniversary marks the death of nine citizens in the Dubrovnik neighborhood of Nova Mokošica. During a shelling attack by Serbian-Montenegrin forces, a mortar projectile struck in front of a shelter, killing nine people and wounding four. This event remains the largest single loss of civilian life during the siege of Dubrovnik. A memorial site was renovated in 2021, and local commemorations include prayer, wreath-laying, and a memorial mass.
