Waratah Super Battery reaches full commercial operations in NSW
The Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales, Australia, has reached full commercial operations. Built by Akaysha Energy on the site of the former Munmorah coal-fired power station, the facility provides 850 MW of power and 1,680 MWh of storage capacity. The project, which attracted over $1 billion in private investment, is designed to act as a ‘shock absorber’ for the grid, supporting the integration of renewable energy and maintaining stability as aging coal plants retire. At peak demand, it can power up to 340,000 households.
In the United States, NineDot Energy has held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hunts Point, Bronx. The 19.6 MW/78.3 MWh facility is expected to be fully operational by summer 2027, aiming to support the local Con Edison grid and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants during high demand.
Other regional energy projects include a community battery initiative by GWMWater in Victoria, Australia, and a proposed 1 GW Morwell battery project in the Latrobe Valley, currently seeking federal environmental approval.
