WardsAuto 2026 awards mark shift to electrified powertrains
For the first time since its inception in 1995, the WardsAuto ‘10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems’ awards have excluded all pure internal combustion engines. The 2026 winners reflect a complete industry shift toward electrification, with all ten honorees utilizing battery electric, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid systems.
The winning group consists of four battery electric vehicles (BEVs), four hybrids (HEVs), and two plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), selected from 26 candidates. Robin Warner, Wards 10 Best program manager, noted that the presence of these electrified options indicates a significant trend in the automotive sector, even among high-performance sports cars.
Recognized BEV models include the Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4Matic Electric, Rivian R2 Performance, Subaru Trailseeker, and Volvo EX60 P10 AWD. Hybrid winners include the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, Hyundai Palisade Hybrid, Nissan Rogue Hybrid, and Porsche 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid.
