Warehouse automation can reduce carbon emissions by 25%

Two studies commissioned by warehouse automation firm Exotec suggest that automating warehouses can reduce total carbon emissions by up to 25%. The research, conducted in collaboration with the French agency ADEME and management consultancy Argon & Co, highlights that increasing storage density and height is a critical lever for sustainability.

By utilizing automation to store goods more densely, warehouses can be built approximately 40% smaller than those requiring manual operation. This compactness reduces the need for building materials and land, and significantly lowers energy consumption. Andreas Stöckl, Exotec’s sales director for Europe, noted that because heating accounts for the majority of a warehouse’s energy use, reducing the volume of space to be heated is essential for lowering the carbon footprint.
