The global warehouse automation market is projected to grow from $19.2 billion in 2023 to $59.5 billion by 2030, driven by consumer demand for rapid delivery. While technology is advancing, industry experts note that fully autonomous warehouses remain rare due to operational variability, such as damaged goods or sudden order changes, which require human judgment.

Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) are being utilized strategically to optimize space and meet shifting consumer demands, particularly in the prepared-foods sector. For example, Spanish rice producer Herba Rice Mills, a division of Ebro Foods, recently implemented an AS/RS system designed by Mecalux at its San José de la Rinconada plant to support market expansion into Africa and the Middle East.
