Warehousing plays a critical role in online retail brand trust
Warehousing has become a critical factor in brand trust and differentiation within the online retail sector. As the shopping experience increasingly occurs after payment, the accuracy and timing of fulfillment directly impact consumer perception of a brand.
Research from McKinsey & Company indicates that shoppers prioritize on-time delivery over speed, with approximately half of consumers tracking their orders to monitor schedules. This places significant pressure on fulfillment operations to maintain accuracy, as errors or delays are typically blamed on the retailer rather than the carrier.
The rise of omnichannel retail has further complicated warehouse responsibilities. Strategies such as 'Buy Online, Pick Up In Store' (BOPIS) and ship-from-store models require integrated inventory management. As noted by former Target supply chain chief Gretchen McCarthy, effective fulfillment relies on a 'one common inventory' approach to serve both physical store shoppers and online customers simultaneously.
