Wareware wa Uchujin animation film to release in Japan

The animated feature film ‘Wareware wa Uchujin’ (We Are Aliens) is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release in Japan on September 25, 2026. Directed by Kohei Kadowaki, the film is the first long-form animation produced by the film label NOTHING NEW.

Set in a rural town during the Heisei era, the story follows a 30-year friendship between Tsubasa, an introverted boy, and Akitaro, a popular and special classmate. The film explores themes of memory, youth, and the complexities of friendship through a realistic and unique visual style. The production has already garnered international attention, having premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Directors' Fortnight and being selected for the feature film competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026.

The film features voice acting by Ryota Bando and Amane Okayama, with additional cast members including Ten Yamasaki and Kemuri Matsui. The soundtrack is composed by Yaffle, with the theme song ‘Sasakure’ performed by adieu.
