Warhound launches $200 million military dog genetic engineering venture

Warhound, a new startup based in Texas, has announced plans to use gene editing and cloning technology to develop specialized dogs for military, police, and search-and-rescue operations. The company has secured $200 million in initial funding and holds a valuation of $1.2 billion.

Founded by Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences and Palmer Luckey of Anduril Industries, the venture aims to improve canine health—such as addressing hip dysplasia—while potentially enhancing specific traits like olfactory capabilities. The company's CEO, David Spark, a former Chief Data Officer for the U.S. Department of Defense, oversees the project.

While the company seeks to stabilize the supply of high-performing working dogs and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, it currently has no contracted customers. The first puppies are expected to be born in early 2027. The project faces scrutiny regarding the ethics of modifying animal life for combat and the scientific difficulty of ensuring that genetic changes translate into reliable behavioral traits and mission success.
