Warhound raises $200 million to develop genetically engineered military dogs

Warhound, a Texas-based defense technology startup, has emerged from stealth mode with $200 million in seed funding and a $1.2 billion valuation. Founded by Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences and Palmer Luckey of Anduril, the company aims to address a critical supply shortage in the U.S. military working dog population.

Currently, over 80% of American military working dogs are imported from Europe, and fewer than half are deemed fit for service due to hereditary health issues such as hip dysplasia, cancer, and vision impairment. Warhound plans to use gene-editing and cloning technologies to create a more robust generation of dogs, specifically targeting breeds like the Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd.

The company intends to eliminate detrimental genetic markers while potentially enhancing physical traits like speed, agility, and olfactory sensitivity. In collaboration with Anduril, these dogs will be outfitted with advanced hardware, including protective vests and goggles equipped with sensors to provide real-time data to handlers. The first litter of genetically modified dogs is expected in early 2027, with service deployment targeted within two years.
