Warm Springs Police Sgt. Chris Fisher killed in targeted shooting

Sgt. Chris Fisher of the Warm Springs Police Department was fatally shot on September 1, 2026, in what authorities believe was a targeted retaliatory attack. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn in Georgia, where a black Chevrolet Silverado pulled alongside Fisher’s patrol vehicle and fired multiple shots.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jimmie Lee Steverson, had been arrested by Sgt. Fisher just days prior on charges including marijuana possession, firearm possession during a crime, and obstruction. Steverson had been released on a $10,000 bond following that arrest.

Following a manhunt and a statewide Blue Alert, Steverson was located by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office during a traffic stop on I-85 in South Carolina. Upon contact with law enforcement, Steverson sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate the shooting.
