Romania weather alert: Sharp temperature drop and high winds
Romania is facing a significant weather shift starting Monday, September 21, driven by the potential influence of a polar vortex. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued warnings for a sharp temperature drop, with averages expected to decrease by 8 to 12 degrees Celsius across much of the country.
High winds are forecasted, with a yellow code alert issued for several regions including Oltenia, central and southern Moldova, the Banat Mountains, and parts of the Southern Carpathians. Wind gusts may reach 50–70 km/h in these areas, and could exceed 80–90 km/h at altitudes above 1,700 meters.
Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in the north, center, east, and southeast, eventually spreading nationwide. In high-altitude mountain regions, precipitation may manifest as sleet or snow. While the cooling will initially be felt in the north, it is expected to reach southern regions by Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures are projected to fluctuate, with daytime maximums generally between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius and nighttime minimums dropping as low as 2 degrees Celsius in certain depressions.
