Warmia-Masuria tree removal plan prompts Prime Minister intervention
The Provincial Road Authority in Olsztyn has planned the removal of approximately 6,675 trees along provincial roads in the Warmia-Masuria region for 2026. The authority stated that the trees were selected because they are diseased, in poor condition, or pose a safety risk to road users. A significant portion of the planned removals, totaling 4,213 trees, is concentrated in the Kętrzyn district.
The scale of the project has drawn concern from environmental activists and local residents who fear the loss of characteristic roadside alleys. In response to the controversy, Prime Minister Donald Tusk requested that the Warmian-Masurian Voivode, Radosław Król, investigate the matter.
Voivode Król has requested a temporary suspension of the tree removal activities while a detailed analysis is conducted. This analysis, based on data from the regional marshal and other institutions, has been submitted to the Prime Minister. While the request for a halt does not mean the entire plan will be abandoned, it may lead to a re-evaluation of specific trees on the list.
