Warner Bros. restores Ken Russell film The Devils

Warner Bros. is undertaking a major restoration of Ken Russell’s controversial film, The Devils, utilizing original camera negatives, separation masters, and A/B reels containing deleted material. The restoration process involves rebuilding the film shot-by-shot against a 2004 DigiBeta assembly to ensure editorial consistency with Russell’s approved vision.

The technical work includes 4K 16-bit scans and color analysis at Water Tower Color. Following its premiere at Cannes in May 2026, the restored version is scheduled for an NC-17 release in October 2026. This effort aims to preserve the filmmaker's intended vision after decades of the film being censored, banned, or available only through bootlegged copies.
