Warning signs of high blood sugar and hyperglycemia
High blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, can manifest through several physical warning signs, though some individuals may experience few noticeable symptoms initially. Key indicators include frequent urination and increased thirst, as the kidneys attempt to eliminate excess glucose by passing it into the urine, which also leads to fluid loss.
Other common symptoms include blurred vision caused by fluid shifts in the eye's lens, unexplained weight loss due to the body breaking down fat and muscle for energy, and persistent tiredness. Individuals may also experience increased hunger, slow-healing wounds, or frequent infections.
While these symptoms provide important clues, they are not sufficient for a medical diagnosis. Because high blood sugar can lead to long-term damage to blood vessels, nerves, and organs, medical professionals emphasize that blood tests are necessary to accurately determine glucose levels and manage conditions like diabetes.
