Berkshire Hathaway makes Alphabet its fifth‑largest holding

Berkshire Hathaway, under the direction of Warren Buffett and CEO Greg Abel, has built a roughly $31 billion stake in Alphabet Inc., pushing the tech giant to become the conglomerate’s fifth‑largest holding. Buffett told CNBC that he personally initiated the investment after earlier missing the chance to buy Google shares in 2018. Berkshire first bought about 17.8 million Alphabet shares in the third quarter of 2025 and then more than doubled that position in the first quarter of 2026, including participation in a $10 billion private‑placement of Alphabet stock in June 2026.

The move reflects Berkshire’s bet on artificial‑intelligence growth, as Alphabet is a leading cloud and AI‑infrastructure provider. Other institutional investors such as WCM Investment Management, Norges Bank and Vanguard have also increased their Alphabet holdings in recent quarters.
