Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway invests $23 billion in Alphabet

Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, bought nearly 40 million Alphabet shares in the first quarter, spending an estimated $13 billion, and added another 28.6 million shares in June through a $10 billion private placement negotiated by CEO‑designate Greg Abel. Buffett said he initiated the investment and highlighted Alphabet’s advertising and cloud businesses as the main drivers.

The stakes represent one of Berkshire’s largest technology holdings, marking a shift from Buffett’s long‑standing avoidance of big‑tech firms. At the same time, smaller institutional investors such as Whittier Trust Co. of Nevada increased their Alphabet position by 2.8%, purchasing 4,716 shares to hold 172,308 shares valued at about $51.7 million.
