Warri Wolves sanctioned after assault on match official
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed significant sanctions on Warri Wolves following an assault on a match official during their Matchday 10 fixture against Kano Pillars at Southern Delta University Stadium.
The league charged the club with breaching security frameworks after an unauthorized individual gained access to restricted areas and assaulted the second assistant referee. The official sustained a nose injury and required medical attention. As a result, Warri Wolves have been fined N2 million for inadequate security and an additional N2 million for the assault. The club must also pay N250,000 in compensation for the official's medical treatment.
Further disciplinary actions include the deduction of three points and three goals from the club's total, and a requirement to play their next three home matches behind closed doors. The NPFL has ordered the club to identify the assailant and provide evidence of prosecution within seven days.
Warri Wolves has reported the incident to the Ughelli Area Police Division and expressed its intention to cooperate with investigations. The club issued a statement distancing itself from the act, condemning the violence, and apologizing to the affected official.
