Warsaw activists launch ‘Abortomat’ pill pickup system
Activists in Warsaw have launched ‘Abortomat’, a system of 22 secure lockers designed for the pickup of medication used in medical abortions. Located at the AboTak support center on Wiejska Street, the facility sits directly across from the Polish Sejm, a location chosen by organizers as a form of protest against current abortion laws in Poland.
The system, initiated by Women Help Women and the Aborcyjny Dream Team, aims to reduce waiting times compared to traditional postal delivery. Users must first consult with Women Help Women to receive a specific code, which then grants access to a pre-prepared package in a designated locker.
While abortion is legal in Poland when the pregnancy threatens a woman's life or health or results from a criminal act, Polish law penalizes those who assist in an unlawful termination. The legality of this new pickup system may face legal challenges.
