Lalka adaptations spark intense debate in Poland

The release of two distinct adaptations of Bolesław Prus’s classic novel “Lalka” has sparked intense national debate in Poland. One production is a cinematic feature directed by Maciej Kawalski, which aims for a more traditional and faithful portrayal of the 19th-century setting. The other is a six-episode Netflix miniseries directed by Paweł Maślona, which offers a contemporary, multi-genre reinterpretation of the story.

The Netflix series has faced significant criticism from viewers and critics who argue that its departures from the original text are too extreme. In response, actress Sandra Drzymalska, who plays Izabela Łęcka, explained that the goal was to explore modern relationships, loneliness, and social class through a contemporary lens. The controversy has reached high levels of public discourse, drawing comments from figures such as Prime Minister Donald Tusk and director Agnieszka Holland.

Beyond the social debate, the adaptations have also prompted discussions regarding the economic themes of the novel. Analyses have compared the fictional wealth of the protagonist, Stanisław Wokulski, to modern values, noting that his wartime capital would be worth approximately 93 million PLN today.
