Warsaw housing cooperative faces rent hikes amid leadership crisis

Residents of the ‘Politechnika’ housing cooperative in Warsaw’s Mokotów district are facing significant rent increases, with some payments rising by 40 percent and others nearly doubling. The crisis follows the April dismissal of the long-standing board by residents seeking greater control through new voting regulations.

The cooperative, which manages 42 buildings and over 2,600 members, is currently in a state of administrative chaos. A legal dispute regarding the National Court Register entry has led a bank to refuse the new temporary board access to the cooperative’s accounts. Consequently, the new leadership is struggling to manage current financial obligations and necessary repairs for the aging post-war buildings while attempting to stabilize finances and adjust previously undervalued advances.
