Warsaw: Human remains rediscovered at former cemetery site
Human remains have been rediscovered in an excavation site in central Warsaw, raising questions about the thoroughness of previous archaeological work. The site, located at Świętej Barbary Street, was part of the former Świętokrzyski Cemetery, which had been closed in the 19th century.
Following the initial exhumation of at least 4,242 individuals for a ceremonial burial, investigative reports suggest that human bones were found again in the excavation pit for a new rectory as recently as December 2024. This discovery occurs amidst a larger development project involving the 170-meter Roma Tower, a construction contract valued at approximately 840 million PLN net. The situation has prompted concerns regarding whether proper procedures were followed and if the interests of developers have superseded the respect due to the deceased.
