Warsaw Mayor Trzaskowski Patronizes Ukrainian Independence Day, Omits Support for Volyn March

On Thursday, Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski announced honorary patronage for the celebration of Ukrainian Independence Day on 24 August at the city's Castle Square. The event, organized by the Stand With Ukraine Foundation and Euromaidan‑Warszawa, is coordinated with the Ukrainian embassy and Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and normally attracts more than 30,000 participants.

Earlier, on 12 July, a Volyn March organized by the Confederation of the Polish Crown marched through Warsaw to honour Polish victims of the 1943‑45 massacres carried out by Ukrainian nationalist formations. Trzaskowski did not extend patronage to that march, despite the city's usual backing of Polish historical commemorations. Critics have described the contrasting actions as a double standard in how the capital supports foreign versus domestic remembrance events.
