Czechoslovakia marks 58th anniversary of 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion

On the 58th anniversary of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, various commemorative events are being held in cities including Prague, Brno, Olomouc, and Liberec. The military intervention, led by the Soviet Union and involving forces from Bulgaria, Hungary, and Poland, aimed to suppress the Prague Spring reforms led by Alexander Dubček.

The invasion began on the night of August 20–21, 1968. It resulted in significant loss of life, with approximately 58 people killed on the first day and the total death toll reaching 108 by the end of the year. Beyond direct combat, the occupation triggered a period of normalization characterized by political purges, censorship, and the suppression of democratic reforms.

Memorial services include participation from state officials, such as President Petr Pavel. The historical impact of the occupation remains a significant point of reflection regarding national sovereignty and the subsequent decades of political control in the region.
