Warsaw police detain man near Constitutional Tribunal
A man identified as Piotr W. was detained near the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw following a confrontation with police. According to the Warsaw Metropolitan Police, the incident began when officers attempted to verify the man's identity near a demonstration. The suspect allegedly refused to provide documentation, fled on foot, and subsequently engaged in a physical altercation with a female officer, causing her a head injury.
Police reported finding a knife on the man during a search. He faces charges including violating the bodily integrity of an officer and forcing officials to cease their duties. While the prosecution sought a one-month temporary arrest, a Warsaw court denied the request, allowing the man to return home after more than 50 hours in custody.
The legal defense, represented by lawyers from Ordo Iuris, disputes the police account. They claim the man was not participating in the demonstration but was performing technical tasks near a tent city. The defense has questioned the necessity of the arrest, the handling of the man's medical condition, and the characterization of the knife, which they suggest was a folding tool or pocket knife. They have also announced intentions to file a complaint regarding the conduct of the intervention.
