Warsaw Prosecutors Close Investigation into Papal Cross Fire
The Warsaw‑Mokotów District Prosecutor's Office announced that the investigation into the fire that destroyed the papal cross at the parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe was terminated. Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba said the case was closed because investigators found no evidence of intentional arson.
Experts concluded the blaze most likely started when a candle (znicze) placed too close to combustible material ignited either the surrounding artificial flowers or the wooden frame of the cross. The fire occurred on 3 April 2026; the cross had stood near the church since 1999 and commemorated Pope John Paul II’s Mass on 2 June 1979, the first in Poland after his election. No surveillance footage or direct witnesses were identified at the scene.
