Warsaw South Hospital scandal triggers resignations and investigations

A series of revelations about the South Hospital in Warsaw has led to political resignations, staff dismissals and multiple investigations. Two Warsaw vice‑mayors stepped down and the hospital’s board and supervisory council were removed after a probe into alleged fraud and abuse of power at the emergency department.

Families of patients have reported serious misconduct in the hospital’s prosectorium, including accusations that staff offered paid funeral services and pressured relatives. Recordings obtained by the portal Zero show the prosectorium coordinator saying, “We have to make sure there’s no mess,” while discussing the death of an elderly man who was found dead in a toilet hours after a night‑time episode of diarrhea. The hospital carried out an internal autopsy without notifying the prosecutor, prompting a criminal investigation for negligent endangerment.

Polish authorities, including the Central Anticorruption Bureau, the National Health Fund and the Ministry of Health, are conducting audits and disciplinary proceedings. The case has sparked a public poll indicating that a majority of respondents consider the consequences for those responsible insufficient.
