Warsaw to transform Rondo de Gaulle’a with tropical greenery
Warsaw is set to undergo a significant urban greening project at Rondo de Gaulle’a, transforming the concrete area surrounding the city's famous palm tree into a tropical-inspired landscape. Starting September 4, the Municipal Roads Authority (ZDM) will remove approximately 500 square meters of concrete paving.
In place of the concrete, the project will introduce artificial hills planted with verbenas and sea holly, alongside nearly 7,000 perennials and bulb plants. The design, created in consultation with artist Joanna Rajkowska—the creator of the original palm installation—aims to mimic an archipelago of islands emerging from a sea of greenery.
The initiative is part of Warsaw's broader effort to reduce urban heat islands by replacing hard surfaces with vegetation. Construction is expected to be completed by November, and the roundabout will remain fully accessible to traffic throughout the works.
