Warsaw to unveil plaque honoring Luciana Frassati-Gawrońska
A commemorative plaque will be unveiled in Warsaw at Nowy Świat 25 to honor Luciana Frassati-Gawrońska on the 19th anniversary of her death. The ceremony will include the Italian Ambassador to Poland, Luca Franchetti Pardo, Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi, and members of the Gawroński family.
Luciana Frassati-Gawrońska, the sister of the canonized Pier Giorgio Frassati, was a significant figure in Polish-Italian relations during World War II. Married to Polish diplomat Jan Gawroński, she used her Italian diplomatic passport to act as an emissary for the Polish government-in-exile. She made seven trips into occupied Poland to transport correspondence, intelligence, and funds for the Polish Underground State.
Her humanitarian efforts included assisting individuals fleeing the German occupation, such as Helena Sikorska, wife of General Władysław Sikorski. Additionally, she engaged in diplomatic efforts in Italy, including interventions involving Benito Mussolini, to advocate for professors from the Jagiellonian University arrested during Sonderaktion Krakau.
